Ben Burwood – Estimator
Looking back on my time as an apprentice
"Looking back, I joined United Living as an apprentice in 2016 following a careers day aimed at construction students at Barking and Dagenham College, where I was a student. At the time I was studying part-time for my Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction and Built Environment alongside employment.
At the career’s day, a number of representatives were present to conduct mock interviews for younger students who wanted work experience placements to further their understanding of the working world. I was invited to the careers day where I met members of the United Living team. During my mock interview they were impressed by my CV as I had prior experience, as well as the fact I was studying for my HNC.
Once I started at United Living, I was hired as a management apprentice and in this role, I could gain experience in a number of departments within the business such as; Estimating, Surveying and Site Management. Once I spent time with each department, I could then choose the role I wanted to pursue. I started by spending time in Estimating where I enjoyed the experience working alongside a number of Senior Estimators who guided me through the United Living construction processes. My day to day work consisted of; setting up and sending out tender enquiries, liaising with sub-contractors, visiting sites and taking off construction drawings to ascertain quantities of work required.
I really enjoyed my apprenticeship with United Living, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone".
